Find peace in the captivating natural beauty and nomadic way of life

Interplanetary travel may be a long way off yet, but the vast golden plains of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert could convince you that you’re in another world. Endemic species and spectacular natural formations lend it an extraterrestrial quality, with whispers of a world you’ve never experienced before, while the undulating dunes seem to stretch into infinity, with nothing but sand and silence between you and the sky.

This fabled land tells the story of thousands of years of history; the footsteps of Khans and nomads alike echo in the dust, with ancient petroglyphs carved into red rock cliffs a lasting testament to their survival in this unforgiving landscape. In folklore, it’s known as the land of dragons, and, upon seeing the fossilised dinosaur remains found at the red ‘flaming cliffs’, you might almost believe it.

It’s traversed now by an altogether different kind of animal; rare Bactrian camels slope across the steppe, while springing gazelles pass through on migration and even elusive snow leopards can be spotted in the mountains.

By camel or on horseback are the traditional ways to get out and explore the region’s captivating scenery, although e-scooters are a modern and undoubtedly fun alternative. While its status as a desert implies nothing but sand, the topography is richly varied, encompassing multiple national parks and surprising biodiversity.
