Mara Conservancies

Mahali Mzuri

Sir Richard Branson’s luxury safari camp

A luxury safari camp located in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Kenya

Mahali Mzuri, meaning ‘beautiful place’ in Swahili, sits within the community owned Olare Motorogi Conservancy, bordering the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and right in the path of the annual great migration.

12 distinctly modern luxury tents can be found strung out along a gentle hillside between scattered trees and grassland. Each have ensuite bathrooms and a private deck where you can let the wildlife come to you. Two tents are configured to accommodate two additional guests who are 15 years and under.

A main tent is located in the middle with a relaxing lounge area with an open fireplace, a library of books, a decking area where breakfast and lunch are served and a communal table inside able to seat a total of 24 guests. Pan-African dishes influenced by a variety of cultures, flavours and spices, to be enjoyed here, or out on bush BBQs, champagne picnics and sundowners. There’s also an infinity pool, binoculars for spotting game and a telescope for stargazing.

Venture out into the conservancy on twice daily game drives to seek out its abundant wildlife. The best time to view the migration will depend on the climatic conditions that year, but in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy you can expect to see the herds arrive anytime from July to September, departing around November for the return journey to the Serengeti in Tanzania.

You’re also welcome to visit one of the Maasai villages in the local area to get a flavour for daily life in the Mara. The village is only 10 minutes’ drive from Mahali Mzuri and the best times to go are first thing in the morning when you can help milk the cattle or in the evening when the cattle, goats and sheep are being herded back to their enclosures for the night. Your guides will take you on a tour and introduce you to their families while explaining some of the cultures and traditions. Children aged 6 and above are welcome here, with tailored activities to immerse and educate younger guests on the environment, local animals and culture.

Solio Private Reserve

Solio Lodge
The only property nestled within a 19,000 acre private wildlife sanctuary and surrounded by the 45,000 acres of the wider Solio Ranch, Solio Lodge’s location is idyllic, with sweeping views across the plains towards Mount Kenya, and when it comes to spotting rhino, you’re in prime position. This is largely due to the fact that it’s the most successful private rhinoceros breeding reserve in Kenya. The lodge features five glass-fronted cottages made from stone and thatch, each with an open fireplace and a large patio, ideal for armchair game viewing and private meals. One of the cottages has two en-suite bedrooms, making it ideal for families. There is a communal mess area where guests can relax with a glass of wine and a good book, and look out across the Solio Reserve. The grounds are home to a kitchen garden where vegetables and herbs are harvested and used in the lodge’s sophisticated menu. Of course, the big draw in Solio is the opportunity to see black and white rhino. The breeding programme here is one of the most successful of its kind and being able to witness these conservation efforts in person is a wonderful experience. As well as rhino, the reserve is home to giraffes, impalas, zebras, buffalos as well as larger predators such as lions and leopards. As well as morning and afternoon game drives, guests can enjoy horse riding, cycling, visits to the local communities and coffee farm or go trout fishing in nearby Aberdere National Park.
