Laikipia Plateau, Kenya

Suyian Lodge

Surrounded by 44,000 acres of unfenced wilderness in Kenya’s Laikipia region
A luxury rustic-style villa with an infinity pool surrounded by nature and lounge chairs under umbrellas.

Relish utter privacy between vast plains and ancient stone boulders

Rising from the plains of Suyian Conservancy, Suyian Lodge is located in the heart of Kenya‘s Laikipia Plateau. The conservancy, which covers 44,000 hectares of unfenced grassland, great granite boulders, savanna and acacia woodland, creates a vital wildlife movement corridor between Laikipia and the northern conservancies.

Wildlife you’ll come across include elephants, lions, reticulated giraffes and the African wild dog — Suyian’s namesake, derived from the Maa language. You’ll also have the chance to see species unique to Laikipia, including the Laikipia hartebeest and striped hyena. On bush walks, you can glimpse various birdlife, like Verreaux eagles and paradise flycatchers. Other activities include experiences with pastoral tribes, having picnics on the banks of the Ewaso Narok River and guiding cattle alongside local herders during ranching excursions.

Suyian Lodge’s rounded roofs bring to mind the ancient granite kopjes (rocky outcrops) ahead. Their curved lines blend into walls clad in natural stone, seamlessly uniting with the escarpment underneath. The interiors’ earthy tones bring the landscape in, as do their tall windows with views that pan out to the Ewaso Narok River and the silhouette of Mount Kenya. Kenyan craftsmanship and décor that celebrates the Samburu tribe also capture the essence of the region’s communities.

Like Suyian’s communal areas, which span a rim-flow swimming pool, library and map room, its suites emerge discreetly from their perch. They flow out to panoramic terraces with plunge pools and sunken daybeds, where you can watch the sunrise before your morning game drive. It’s hard to imagine a better spot to drink in the scenery.

As with its design, the gastronomy here takes pride in its Kenyan spirit, with ingredients grown in the garden on-site or locally sourced. You can pluck the day’s harvest before savouring a freshly prepared dinner on your suite’s deck. You can also enjoy an immersive experience at the courtyard’s open fire with Samburu-style grills. Gather around the lodge’s firepit for pre-dinner drinks, which is perfectly positioned to offer a sweeping vista of the surrounding plains.

Sasaab Lodge
Located on the edge of the Ewaso River in a pristine wilderness within the Westgate Community Conservancy, the lodge boasts some fantastic views and is perfectly located to give you some amazing game sightings. If you want to get involved in activities, there is a huge variety of things to get involved with but otherwise, ‘Spa Saab’ will look after you in calming treatment rooms and it even offers yoga. What’s more, Sasaab is involved in many projects with the local Samburu tribe and runs many sustainability initiatives. Each of the nine distinctive open-walled rooms are furnished with a Moroccan flair with simple but elegant trimmings. They are extremely spacious (over 100sqm each) with west facing verandas and their own private plunge pools overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. You’re higher up and closer to the Sahara here, so it can get very warm, but the lodge has been built to provide respite from the heat. The open tented rooms are airy and your plunge pool is just a short stroll from your bed. The family unit is ideal for two couples travelling together as well as families. This luxurious suite is spacious, featuring one en-suite double room and one en-suite twin room with a communal lounge and private plunge pool. The main dining area is reminiscent of a souk and is great for a lazy afternoon watching the game frequent the river below. The lodge has a strong relationship with the hundreds of families that live on and own the conservancy and they are very proud to give guests to the lodge a special insight into their daily lives. These cultural experiences are non intrusive and if you’re lucky, they might even invite you to see a genuine traditional ceremony in the village. Trips to the local Samburu markets take place twice a week and are not to be missed.
