From June to September, Oiá Pop Up Atins creates an intimate base in the fishing village of Atins, the gateway town to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, known for its white dunes interspersed with igarapés (creeks) and shallow lagoons. This seasonal stay is designed to connect to the rhythms of the landscape with big verandas and open-air showers that keep you close to the sea breeze and surrounding gardens.
With just six bungalows, Pop Up Atins feels like a private stay in a large, comfy house. Rooms feature warm, natural elements: airy windows, basket lampshades, light wood, linen and whitewashed stone. Shared spaces allow for relaxed, intimate socialising by the pool, among the tranquil gardens and in a dedicated yoga space.
Meals highlight regional produce and traditions, and often include excursion picnics by hidden lagoons and private meals at a beach cabana. Outdoor experiences immerse you in the nature and culture of the area: watching flocks of scarlet ibis paint the sky red at sunset, kayaking through calm creeks, kitesurfing, or crossing the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park to see one of Brazil’s most celebrated sunsets.

Trancoso
Run by Wilbur Das, creative director of the Diesel fashion label, Uxua exudes a great character and attention to detail, all with a rustic theme that merges effortlessly with the local setting. Accommodation is set in a number of private ‘Casas’ each with a unique style and character and ranging from one to three bedrooms; one is even a tree house. As a stunning centre-piece to the accommodation is the pool, lined with 40,000 turquoise aventurine quartz stones (native to Bahia) that are a testament to the careful and painstaking care taken to create a hotel that is at once unique but with roots in the location it is based.
The hotel is located on the ‘Quadrado’ or village square of Trancoso and has a spa with an extensive range of treatments. The restaurant serves delicious cuisine made with fruits and spices grown in the hotel’s own gardens. Many of the ‘Casas’ have their own full kitchen and local chefs can be brought in to give you a lesson in local cuisine. The Casas themselves are large and equipped with all the amenities one would expect in a luxury accommodation, some include jacuzzis and private plunge pools.
