To make the most of your visit to the Maldives, it’s best you go prepared for the tropical monsoon weather. It could affect your trip depending on what time of year you go.

The winter northeastern monsoon occurs over the dry season from December to April, while the wet season brings with it the southwest monsoon, strong winds and storms. The change in seasons happens around April/May and September/October. However, temperatures don’t vary terribly.

The hottest month is March, while the coldest is January. If you’re looking to make the most out of swimming in the sea, the best time to visit the Maldives is in April when the waters are warm, calm and clear. Overall, the best weather is between November and May - even if there are a few showers, they generally pass quickly.

Water Activities

Snorkelling in the Maldives is great between December and April when visibility is good because of calmer waters. In the water around the islands you’ll find a variety of coral reefs with numerous marine ecosystems in and around them. Look out for sea turtles, manta rays, molluscs, whale sharks, crabs, whales and dolphins. For the best views of manta rays, visit Hanifaru Bay between May and November. The best waves for surfers are usually also found between May and November.

If your main goal is to spend your days soaking up the sun on an idyllic beach, then December to April is the best time to visit the Maldives. You won’t experience much rain and the weather will be warm and tropical. You’ll also find that the hot dry weather from October to December also attracts a lot of visitors.
