    Lakes Bled and Bohinj, Slovenia

    Vila Muhr

Alpine heritage restored on the edge of Lake Bohinj
High-angle view of a dark wood chalet with a grey roof and a modern building with a grass-covered roof.

A restored historic villa set quietly above Lake Bohinj

Perched near the eastern shore of Lake Bohinj in Slovenia’s Julian Alps, Vila Muhr is a meticulously restored historic villa originally built in 1902. It was previously a hunting lodge for the Viennese merchant Adolf Muhr, who also owned Bled Castle. The villa was later frequented by European royalty, including Yugoslav King Alexander and British royalty such as Prince George, Duke of Kent – an uncle of Queen Elizabeth II – who became engaged to Princess Marina here in 1934.

Fully restored and reopened in 2025, the villa has an intimate collection of just four individually appointed suites, each combining modern alpine comfort with subtle nods to the building’s history. Bedrooms are full of natural textures, such as larch wood, warm rugs and faux fur. Each opens onto a private balcony that frames the Julian Alps and comes with a soaking tub, a spa bath or a private sauna.

Vila Muhr’s restaurant, Gourmet, is led by Croatian chef Davor Arnautović and focuses on regionally inspired cuisine rooted in Alpine heritage. Freshwater fish, mountain herbs, cheeses and local wines pair with seasonal ingredients in a four-course tasting menu. Meals might include lake trout, ravioli with mountain cheese, quail, venison or indigenous Slovenian trdinka corn, which is hyperlocal to the area.

Vila Muhr also offers a spa centre and wellness facilities, including a sauna and hot tub, as well as a bar and wine cellar with around 500 labels. Among the activities around Bohinj, you can go hiking and cycling in Triglav National Park, horse riding, skiing or enjoying water-based pursuits on the lake.
