Vast wilderness, thundering waterfalls and epic wildlife
Zambia is a quintessential safari destination and a fantastic choice for families seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences. There are 20 Zambian national parks, each with its own array of impressive wildlife and diverse landscapes to explore on foot, by boat or on four wheels. We can help you choose the ideal mix of destinations for an unforgettable Zambia family holiday.
Embark on a walking safari in South Luangwa National Park, where this concept was pioneered. This immersive experience is best for families with older children, as there’s often a minimum age of 12–16 years old. The nearby North Luangwa National Park is the only place in the country where you can see all of the Big Five, thanks to the successful reintroduction of rhinos.
Everyone will be enthralled by the natural majesty of Victoria Falls. And, the abundant water-based activities and adventure sports in the area around Livingstone will keep the whole family entertained. The Lower Zambezi is also a top pick for river safaris featuring elephants and island-hopping buffalo.
Our favorite Zambia family vacations strike the perfect balance of wildlife viewing, active adventures and relaxing stays at Zambia’s best safari lodges and camps. Contact us to start crafting a bespoke itinerary full of age-appropriate activities and exclusive experiences designed just for you.
Highlights
Enjoy excursions with expert safari guides who are among the best in the world at what they do
Visit Kafue National Park to see adorable animals like spotted-necked otters and bush babies
Spend a magical night under the stars with a family sleep-out experience
Track white rhinos on foot in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
Soar high above the Batoka Gorge on a thrilling zip line tour
Two things I especially recommend in Zambia are a walking safari in South Luangwa and time at Victoria Falls, close enough to feel the spray. This is often the part younger travellers find the most fun.

When to visit Zambia
The best time for a family safari in Zambia is the dry season from May to October, when the weather is optimal and animals are easiest to spot. The green season from November to April offers dramatic scenery and lush landscapes thanks to heavy rain, but some areas become inaccessible.
The best time to visit Victoria Falls depends on your priorities. You’ll get the best views from February to July, with peak water levels from March to May. If your family is set on river rafting or swimming in the Devil’s Pool, however, you’ll need to visit between August and January.
