Gondwana stands out as an exceptional game reserve not only because of its admirable efforts to restore the area from farmland to safari, but it is the only Fynbos (heathland) reserve in the world to have a free roaming Big Five along with the more endangered species of Cape Mountain Zebra, Black Rhino and Black Harrier.
The reserve, just 25 minutes from Mossel Bay and spanning 11,000 hectares of undulating grassland, dramatic hills and stunning mountain views has also reintroduced Cheetah back to area and has ten different species of Springbok, which is more than the Kruger.
And, as with all world class safari reserves such a Gondwana, there is a choice of chic and sophisticated accommodation. There’s the main lodge at the centre of the Kwena Lodge which houses indoor and outdoor dining rooms, lounge, bar, pool and a newly built Spa too. The Fynbos Villas are a close by and then the large Private Bush Villas surround the second main lodge, the Lehele.
Promoting indigenous flora and fauna
Gondwana’s goal is to continue to expand its total conservation area to provide the Western Cape with a large eco-tourism destination for the promotion of indigenous flora and fauna as well as the rehabilitation of wetland areas currently under threat from invasive alien species. Gondwana has already reintroduced the first endangered black rhino to the Western Cape from where they historically occurred.
