Outdoor pool and exterior of Pousada Literária

Heritage hotel in the heart of Paraty

Located in a restored colonial building in the historic centre of Paraty is the beautiful heritage hotel, Pousada Literária. With a name inspired by the annual literary festival which takes place in the town every year, the hotel plays host to several of the festival’s events and immerses you in its literary charm. Outside of the festival, the theme continues with next door Marés bookshop, which is home to more than 4,000 books and allows visitors to browse the titles with a cup of coffee and a pastry from the cafe.

The hotel itself houses a range of 27 spacious suites, apartments and villas, each, of course, with its own selection of books. The interiors are elegant and understated, with splashes of colour from the textiles and artwork on the walls.

The Quintal das Letras restaurant invites you to savour traditional Caiçara cuisine and has adopted the farm-to-table concept to showcase the wonderful local and organically grown ingredients. Make the most of quiet mornings and early sunshine by taking advantage of the hotel’s breakfast anywhere, anytime perk, which allows you to enjoy a delicious breakfast spread, including their specialty cheese bread waffles, at a time and place of your choosing.

There is an outdoor swimming pool as well as a lovely shaded terrace and a small garden. The hotel also has its own schooner, the Maria Panela, on which you can explore the landscapes of Saco do Mamanguá, the only tropical fjord on the Brazilian coast. Inland, immerse yourself in the nearby Atlantic Forest with Fazenda Bananal, where you can learn about the magnificent ecosystem and their socio-environmental projects.

    The impact of your stay:

    • During your stay, you’ll experience how nature, culture and community come together in Paraty’s rich landscape. Discover the Biodiversity Observatory, where researchers study the region’s plants and wildlife – from  birds and mammals to amphibians and reptiles. Pousada Literaria supports the organisation by funding field research and scholarships for local students.
    • Pousada Literaria further empowers local youth by collaborating with Inspirar para o Futuro, a local initiative that empowers young people to explore culture, biodiversity and tourism through workshops and hands-on experiences.
    • The hotel supports the Recyclables Cooperative of Paraty, which not only protects the local environment but also provides meaningful employment for local residents. Your stay helps support the cooperative with both financial and in-kind donations, including donating uniforms and providing support from the property’s own sustainability team.
    • True to its namesake, Pousada Literaria is proud to host one of the opening events of the world-renowned annual International Literary Festival of Paraty (FLIP). The hotel remains actively involved throughout the festival by providing complimentary lodging for invited authors as well as spaces for panels and talks during the event. Through these actions, the property encourages the celebration of culture and creativity within the local community.
