San Sebastian, Spain
Hotel Akelarre

Panoramic sea views and one of Spain’s most celebrated dining experiences
On the slopes of Mount Igueldo, Hotel Akelarre sits above the Bay of Biscay, a few minutes’ drive from the centre of San Sebastian. Opened in 2017 as an extension of Pedro Subijana’s legendary three-Michelin-star restaurant, the hotel is one of the most celebrated dining hotels in Spain. It offers an intimate experience, with only 22 rooms and suites, all designed by the architecture studio Mecanismo to make the most of the dramatic coastal setting.
The rooms are focused on the uninterrupted sea views, each with a private terrace. The interiors are spacious and boast minimalist and warm decor, with neutral linens and wood accents and Woods Copenhagen bath amenities.
The heart of the experience is dining at the Michelin-starred restaurant. Akelarre first opened as a restaurant in 1970, with Pedro Subijana taking the helm in 1975 and going on to co-found the New Basque Cuisine movement. The restaurant earned its third Michelin star in 2007, and the hotel opened a decade later, allowing guests to pair one of Spain’s landmark dining experiences with an overnight stay. Alongside Akelarre’s celebrated tasting menus and extensive wine list, there’s also the more relaxed Espazio Oteiza restaurant and a spa with a heated hydrotherapy pool and treatments using Valmont skincare. You can also go for a hiking tour or a private sailing experience along the Basque coast in a historic yacht.
