A short drive from the airport and under an hour from the hustle and bustle of Colombo itself, this is a great option for those wanting a tranquil stay while never being too far from the action.

The hotel features 17 elegant rooms and suites, some featuring their own verandah overlooking the garden. For families or small groups, the two-bedroom Mountbatten Suite with private plunge pool and garden is perfect. It is so named because Lord Mountbatten was commander in chief of the south east Asia command, the headquarters of which were in Sri Lanka – then Ceylon.

Dine at the Verandah restaurant, which makes use of fresh, local ingredients to create delicious fusion cuisine. You can also enjoy high tea in the garden, enjoyed with a cup of Sri Lanka’s famous tea. When you want to relax and unwind, the Z Spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments, and there is an outdoor pool nestled among the lush foliage.

Jetwing Beach

Located north of Colombo on the golden sands of Negombo Beach, Jetwing Beach is a lovely property designed by internationally renowned Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa.

There are 75 deluxe rooms and three suites, all decorated in soft, earthy tones and with private balconies overlooking the ocean. When it comes to eating and drinking, the hotel has plenty of options. Enjoy traditional Sri Lankan cuisine at the laidback Sands Restaurant, or fine dining at Black Coral. There is also a beachside cafe serving snacks and light bites as well as a beautiful terrace bar. For something extra special, guests can enjoy a private dinner on the beach.

There is also a large outdoor pool surrounded by palm trees and a spa offering a range of relaxing treatments.

Galle Face Hotel

As one of the oldest hotels in all Asia – opened in 1864 – the Galle Face Hotel is a historic landmark sitting in an enviable position on the city’s seafront promenade, facing the cricketers, picnickers and kite flyers on Galle Face Green.

After a lengthy restoration, the hotel has retained much of charm and tradition, while adding modern comforts and features.

158 rooms are split between the Regency and Classic Wings. Many feature sea views, with the best vistas enjoyed from the suites and studio rooms found in the four towers.

The Indian Ocean is the focal point for the large ocean-side saltwater swimming and there’s also a spa and fitness centre.

Three dining venues include buffets at the Veranda, while The 1864 offers fine dining. For lighter bites, head to Sea Spray, the new seafood restaurant on the waterfront. A range of drinking venues range from a welcoming pub to a poolside bar, but no stay here is complete without a glass of Pimm’s on the the Chequerboard’s terrace as the Sri Lankan flag as it is ceremoniously lowered at sunset.

A museum showcases the property’s illustrious history, with the star attraction Prince Philip’s first automobile, an an immaculate 1935 Standard Nine from his time stationed here during the Second World War, the star exhibit.
