Located within a national park on the south west coast of Sumba, Watukaka Eco Resort is the perfect place for an idyllic island escape.

Four luxury tents are nestled amongst lush green forest, looking out over sparkling water and secluded coves. The tents feature stone walls and canvas exteriors and are beautifully furnished with lots of natural materials that reflect the surroundings.

Beds are positioned so you can watch the sun rise and large terraces are the perfect spot to relax with a good book or glass of wine. Each tent features an open-air shower area so you feel truly connected to the natural environment.

Fresh local ingredients are combined with French techniques and flavours in the restaurant, a reflection of the owner’s European background. When you’re not diving into the turquoise ocean, there is an infinity pool at the camp as well as a spa offering a range of relaxing treatments.

The location of Watukaka is simply idyllic. Wild horses and water buffalo share the land and there are beautiful beaches – some of which are great for surfing – nearby. There is also the option to trek, visit local villages and swim in waterfalls before coming back to enjoy a sunset BBQ on the beach.

Spread across the clifftop, on an idyllic islet, and enclosed amongst the leafy canopy of a tropical rainforest, this eco-friendly haven was designed to be a reflection of the island’s traditions and culture.

Designed and built as to not impact the surrounding natural environment, Lelewatu Resort recycles waste and grey water and incorporates traditional thatched-roof villas, characterised by natural woods, open-floor plans, lofty spaces, light cotton and handwoven textiles. Rambling private decks are adorned with freshwater plunge pools, outdoor showers and day-beds facing the ocean.

At the heart of the resort is the glittering infinity pool, stretching out to the cliff edge, and the Maraga Spa, which employs organic products to enhance treatments. Set below the main building, Lelewatu’s lagoon, with a secluded deck, allows you to further relax while taking in the idyllic vista of the coastline. Further adventure can be found beyond the gates, with jungle treks, bicycle rides, village tours, paddy-field picnics and horse riding all available for booking.

With equally magnificent views, La Humba Lounge is a sublime spot for afternoon tea. Bokosawu Restaurant specialises in local dishes, drawing on fresh produce from the garden and catch of the day for inspiration. For refreshing cocktails, with tropical twists, Bokosawu’s poolside bar is sure to appease, especially if you start with the lychee martini.
