    Hacienda Xcanatun

    Spacious hacienda hotel

Luxury hotel set amidst tropical gardens

Located just 25 minutes from the heart of Mérida, along the road to the Gulf Coast, Hacienda Xcanatún was once one of Yucatán’s most prominent 18th-century henequén (sisal) estates. Today, it is now a luxury hotel in Merida that has been restored to honour its storied past.

Spread across four acres of private gardens, the hacienda grounds offer shaded patios, tranquil courtyards and an Olympic-size swimming pool lined with Bali beds and outdoor showers. Inside, Hacienda Xcanatún’s 18 original suites retain their charm. Tall wooden shutters filter soft light across intricately patterned tile floors, while hand-carved dark wood furniture and stone-columned archways offer an homage to the old world. In a seamless contrast, there are also 36 newly constructed suites.

At the heart of the property, the Casa de Piedra restaurant is beloved by locals and guests alike. Its seasonal menu draws inspiration from Yucatecan traditions and contemporary technique, prepared with ingredients sourced from regional suppliers. Suspended above a peaceful lily-covered pond, the spa offers treatments inspired by eastern healing traditions and infused with aromatic oils from Asia, chosen with intention for individual needs.

For those seeking to explore the richness of the Yucatán Peninsula, Hacienda Xcanatún is ideally placed. Beyond the hotel, the historic centre of Mérida offers an array of experiences including the colonial mansions lining Paseo de Montejo, local markets filled with handmade textiles and spices, and contemporary art galleries located inside centuries-old buildings. Nearby, the golden town of Izamal, with its bright yellow facades and layered history of Maya, Spanish and modern influences, makes for a great day trip. A short drive in the opposite direction brings you to the tranquil beaches of Playa Progreso, where you can dine al fresco at a long communal table set directly in the sand as you enjoy the sounds of live Mexican music and the gentle murmur of the sea.

    Chablé Resort & Spa

    Around Mérida

    Chablé Resort & Spa

Just 30 minutes from Merida and nestled in the Yucutan jungle is Chablé Resort & Spa, a wonderful retreat with a focus on wellness.

Chablé is spread over 300 hectares but the actual resort only covers 30, so there is plenty of open space in which to find your own tranquil corner. There are 38 casitas with private pools as well as two larger villas, perfect for families or groups of friends. The original 19th-century walls form the basis of each casita but inside the decor is contemporary and colourful with local wood and stone used throughout.

At the heart of the resort is a natural cenote, which forms the centre of the spa. Surrounded by the Mayan forest, this is a wonderful place to unwind with a treatment and take advantage of the sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and salt cabin. Take a dip in the infinity pool or get your heart rate up in the gym or on the tennis court.

There are three restaurants at Chablé, all of which use fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from the organic garden. Ixi’im, translates as corn in the Mayan language, and the menu is a innovative blend of regional and local Mexican flavours. Ki’ol, meaning healthy, offers light snacks and ceviche, and the spa restaurant caters for a range of dietry requests with dedicated gluten free, lactose free and vegan menus.

Chablé has one of the country’s largest tequila collections and guests can have great fun discovering this most Mexican of spirits with a tequila and chocolate tasting. There is also the option to take part in a cooking class with local chefs who will help you bring out the true flavours of Mexico.

One of the joys of staying at Chablé is taking the time to fully unwind and recharge. However, should you wish to go exploring then there are bikes to hire and incredible Maya ruins to discover.
