Itinerary in detail
Every Jacada trip is tailored to your personal preferences and interests. Below you’ll find a sample itinerary to inspire your own custom-designed journey.
Days 1–3
Two nights in Copenhagen
The compact Danish capital is a joy to explore on foot and provides the perfect base from which to begin your Arctic expedition. Spend two nights here in one of our favourite city hotels, exploring the colourful sights of Nyhavn and Freetown Christiania. Indulge in Danish style on coffee and pastries, browse the design stores that dot the city centre and seek out the famous Little Mermaid sculpture based on the fairytale by Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen.

Days 3–10
Board in Kangerlussuaq
Arrive by plane to Greenland’s only inland town, Kangerlussuaq, which sits at the end of a 180-kilometre-long fjord filled with wildlife. You will transfer by zodiac to your luxury Arctic expedition cruise and toast your departure into the scenic fjord and beyond with a glass of champagne. This part of Greenland is rugged and remote, with a handful of towns and villages set between glaciers, mountains and twisting fjords. You’ll have the chance to see polar bears, reindeer, seabirds and more on this exploration of Greenland’s west coast.

Highlights of west Greenland
Sisimiut
Disko Bay
Uummannaq

A taste of city life in Sisimiut
Set on the west coast and looking out over the Davis Strait, Sisimiut is the second-largest city in Greenland with a population of over 5,000 people. It’s an industrial Arctic hub for the fishing industry, but there’s plenty of small-town charm to enjoy in its museum quarter. Take in its historic sights, like the Blue Church built in 1775, or visit the exhibitions in the Taseralik cultural centre. This is the place to try some of Greenland’s delicacies, including suaasat – the national dish made from marine mammals and seabirds – and meet the sled dogs that make travelling possible across the Arctic snow and ice during winter.

A day in Disko Bay
Land in Qeqertarsuaq, a small community on the southern tip of Disko Island, this part of Greenland is fringed by black-sand beaches and backed by immense dark mountains. Today is all about the wonders of nature; the distinct geology is fascinating and best discovered on a guided hike with naturalist experts. A Zodiac trip will get you closer to the icebergs that float through the seas here, while also exploring the waterfalls and caves of Kuannit.

Delve into local life in Uummannaq
The heart-shaped peaks of Uummannaq mountain make an arresting sight as you arrive in the eponymous town that sits at its base. At 1,175 metres high, it presides over a community of around 1,500 people. Visit the local market, where artisans sell handicrafts and delicacies, delve into the town’s history in the museum or hike to ‘Santa’s house’, a popular local landmark where Danish children are told Santa Claus resides. As you sail away through Uummannaq Fjord, gaze back at the jagged peaks glowing under the midnight sun.

Learn to capture the moment
Capturing the astonishing beauty of the Arctic can be a challenge, but a specialist photography guide will help you frame the perfect image, no matter what camera you’re using.

There is nothing quite like kayaking among the iridescent blue icebergs of west Greenland and your adventure guides will ensure you have the opportunity to enjoy this experience in the best conditions.

Eqip Sermia
Ilulissat
Itilleq

Icy adventures in a Zodiac boat
Flowing from the vast Greenland Ice Sheet, Eqip Sermia is one of the smaller glaciers in this Arctic region, but it’s also one of the most active. Ice calves and tumbles from its shelf on a regular basis, creating a dramatic crash into the ocean as it falls. Conditions permitting, you will get close to this mesmerising action on a Zodiac, piloted by guides who know the best spots to see this natural spectacle.

Witness the birthplace of icebergs
The town of Ilulissat has many draws: it was the birthplace of 19th-century Arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen, there’s fresh seafood to try in its local restaurants and it’s home to exciting markets and galleries with local art and crafts. But most thrilling is the parade of icebergs that glide through the fjord from Sermeq Kujalleq, the largest glacier in the Arctic. An astonishing 10% of the Northern Hemisphere’s icebergs come from this single glacier, and you’ll witness their journey through the fjord from the hiking trails of the Icefjord.

Delve into Inuit heritage and community
This small community just north of the Arctic Circle has its roots in Inuit culture dating back millennia. Set beside the Aassivisuit-Nipisat UNESCO World Heritage Site, where remains of ancient Inuit settlements have been discovered alongside evidence of hunting as far back as 4,200 years ago, today it is a cluster of colourful homes where locals still rely on the flora and fauna of the region to survive. Embrace their culinary traditions with dishes including Arctic char, reindeer and muskoxen.

Flightseeing

Explore the Icefjord by boat
Join an optional two-hour boat trip through the Icefjord for a better perspective on the enormous chunks of ice that bob in the waters here. Witnessing something so vast can move so silently is an astonishing experience. From the deck of the boat, look out for whales in the water among the ice or curious harbour seals popping their heads above the surface.

Take in aerial views of icebergs
It’s hard to appreciate the sheer scale and quantity of the icebergs that float down the Icejord until you take to the skies. Our expert local pilots will fly you high above the fjord in a small wing-mounted aircraft for the best views as you soar out towards Disko Bay. Look out for whales breaching the surface between the icy giants.
Days 10–12
A return to the city
After a final cruise through the 160-kilometre Kangerlussuaq Fjord, it’s time to bid farewell to your luxury Arctic expedition crew and vessel. The Fjord a fine farewell, with Arctic tundra on land playing home to muskoxen, reindeer and Arctic fox. A final Zodiac transfer will leave you at the town’s airport for a flight back to Copenhagen, where you will spend your final two nights at one of our favourite hotels. Reminisce about your Arctic Greenland cruise over Danish pastries in one of the many chic cafes in the city.
