    The Balearic Islands, Spain

    Son Vell

Restored eighteenth-century estate hotel in rural Menorca
Facade of a historic stone building with atriums lit up inside, and a stone plaza in the foreground with trees on the right side.

An Italianate manor estate reimagined as a refined countryside retreat

Son Vell stands in the Menorcan countryside near Ciutadella, centred on a honey-coloured 18th-century Italianate manor surrounded by gardens, olive groves and farmland. The historic estate was restored and reopened as a hotel in 2023, preserving architectural details such as marés sandstone walls, timber beams and traditional dry-stone walls typical of the Balearic Islands.

The manor house anchors the wider estate, whose gardens are planted with citrus, figs and Mediterranean shrubs. Rooms and suites are within the main house, restored farm buildings and newly constructed garden residences across the grounds. The decor incorporates sandstone, terracotta flooring and original wood beams, as well as sustainably-sourced, naturally dyed linens and handmade furnishings.

The estate’s gardens are full of olive and citrus trees, and two outdoor pools provide space to swim or relax between exploring the island. A short walk or bike ride leads to Cala Son Vell, a rocky cove where you can swim in clear water or hike along a historical coastal bridleway.

The main restaurants, Sa Clarisa and Vermell, focus on seasonal Menorcan produce and ingredients grown on-site with menus based on local culinary traditions. The estate encourages slow exploration: walking through the gardens, horse riding, yoga or pilates sessions, cooking classes or catching a film at the private outdoor cinema.

The ancient Camí de Cavalls trail runs along the coast for walking and cycling, while Ciutadella is a short drive away with its harbour, historic streets and restaurants.
