    Le Monumental Palace

    Porto

    Le Monumental Palace

Enclosed behind a dramatic Gothic facade, Le Monumental Palace, part of the French Maison Albar hotel group, is an art-deco delight, embodying the distinct style and lively atmosphere of the 1920s and 30s. Situated in the heart of Porto, on the wide Avenida dos Aliados, it’s the perfect base from which to explore the city.

The 76 rooms and suites are sumptuously decorated – angular Art Deco patterns contrast with the clean glow of white marble, while striking accent colours of gold, teal and red bring the room to life.

There are many places for Michelin-star dining in Porto, yet Le Monumental Palace’s restaurant, Le Monument, bearing a Michelin star of its own, manages to hold its own in this vibrant foodie city. 14 course tasting menus take you on a culinary voyage, both through the chef’s own career and the gastronomic delights of the region. Alternatively, the Yakuza restaurant serves irresistible Japanese dishes, followed by classic cocktails and, of course, regional Port, at its accompanying bar.

If you want to really get into the hotel’s vintage vibes, the Bar Américain, tucked away in the heart of the hotel, has an extensive cocktail menu celebrating the golden age of speakeasies set to the sounds of soft jazz on the piano.

The hotel spa, The Grand Bleu Spa, has an indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath, with treatments using Ignae or Augustinus Bader products. If you want to explore, most of Porto is within walking distance. Navigate the tree-lined boulevards of historic neighbourhoods such as Sé, home to Medieval architecture and Porto cathedral. Alternatively, head down to the Ribeira, or riverfront, for a stroll along the banks of the Douro.
