The Dolomites and the Alps, Italy

Gardena Grödnerhof Gourmet Hotel & Spa

    Italian refinement with mountain charm
Hotel exterior with glass fronted building and green lawn area with white umbrellas and lounge chairs. In the background are mountains with green forests.

Historic lodge with fine dining in the heart of Val Gardena

Opened in 1923 in the mountain village of Ortisei, the Gardena Grödnerhof has evolved from a small mountain inn into one of South Tyrol’s most distinguished hotels. Its heritage is reflected in warm Alpine architecture and natural materials, like stone pine, spruce and wool, which are used throughout the 58 rooms and suites. Many also have balconies overlooking the Dolomites

Ortisei is the main village in the Val Gardena, which puts you at the heart of the famed Sella Ronda ski circuit, and steps from the lifts and hiking trails in summer.

The hotel’s Anna Stuben restaurant, led by chef Reimund Brunner, holds a Michelin star for its creative interpretation of regional flavours, pairing South Tyrolean produce with Mediterranean lightness. Dishes might combine Breton lobster with Swiss pine and sea asparagus, or hay soup created with 24 different herbs and flowers. Breakfast celebrates local ingredients, from mountain cheeses and honeys to warm pastries.

Wellness unfolds in the Anais Beauty & Spa, which has saunas, whirlpools and a salt-water pool with mountain views. Treatments utilise Alpine herbs and essential oils for gentle recovery after a day outdoors on the slopes or trails. The hotel also has an in-house ski service, with equipment hire, lift passes and ski instructors all provided, and a ski bus that drops you at the lifts.

    Aman Venice

    Venice

    Aman Venice

The sumptuous Aman Venice sits within the 16th century Palazzo Padaopoli, right on the Grand Canal moments west of the Rialto Bridge. A work of architect Gian Giacomo dé Grigi, the Aman Venice holds museum-quality treasures including Tiepolo frescoes, gilded ceilings and centuries-old leather wall coverings.

Arriving at the property by boat, step out into the lofty reception hall and ascend a grand stairway to the piano nobile, traditionally the grandest floor of a palazzo, in the Padaopoli’s case designed by renewed 18th century neo-classicist Michelangelo Guggenheim.

Each of the Aman Venice’s 24 rooms are a unique space capturing the opulence of the city’s romantic heyday, featuring original architectural details and the work of a number of Italy’s great artists. Contemporary furnishings complement antique chandeliers, wood panelling, and protected frescos. A selection of the rooms offer incredible Grand Canal views.

Leading from the piano nobile are the Blue Bar and the Yellow and Red Dining Rooms. The former, with a magnificent fireplace and Cesare Rotta ceiling mural, overlooks the canal, while the latter has views of the hotel’s canal side garden – a real rarity in Venice – where alfresco dining is possible in the summer months. Upstairs on the third storey is a spa and its three treatment rooms.

With the canals of Venice quite literally at the doorstep, this city begs to be explored. The Aman Venice also offers its own private box at the nearby Teatro La Fenice for a night at the opera.
