The Fasano Group (with hotels in Rio and Sao Paulo) has recently completed, or should we say yet again triumphed, with its achingly stylish and elegant, but characteristically understated, Las Piedras hotel in La Barra. And despite its rural location, has its own private beach.
Expertly combining the traditional with the cutting edge in contemporary, the hotel’s chief architect Isay Weinfeld, has tastefully blended the original site’s farmhouse (now the gourmet Italian restaurant), with more modern minimalist concrete structures designed to ‘embrace the subtle folds of the landscape’.
The result is 32 bunker-style cabins decorated in the classic 1950s Brazilian design, a traditional rustic-style restaurant, a cool 1920s library-lounge, a rock (swimming) pool, and a well-appointed Spa: all set into 480 hectares of pastureland and forest glades.
The atmosphere is relaxed and far from pretentious, and staff are friendly and helpful; organising you a shuttle to the beach, picnics or water sporting activities. There’s even a fleet of Mini Cooper cars and Mercedes GLK to rent.
