60 kilometres from Puerto Vallarta, Hotelito Desconocido is a gorgeous eco-resort that affords a different experience to that of the sleek properties further along the coast.
On the edge of a quiet and unspoiled beach, Hotelito Desconocido has only 27 rooms – palafitos – each decorated with unique artwork and materials from local artisans.
The area is a haven for bird life and turtles, the latter of which nest on Hotelito’s shores each year. In season (June to December), you can release the hatchlings that don’t make it on the first attempt. You can also go bird-watching, fishing, horse riding, hiking, kayaking, sailing, practice yoga and take cooking classes.
One of the hotel’s two restaurants, El Diablito, offers four or five-course organic tasting menus with fresh seafood and produce from the hotel’s garden. The other dining option is El Nopalito, the beach club and restaurant, where you can also chill by the salt-water pool in the submerged hammocks.
As it’s an eco-lodge, there is no air-conditioning and there isn’t 24-hour electricity, and it’s best to avoid travelling in the rainy season when there are more mosquitoes. This a bare-foot luxury lodge, but that character is one of the reasons we love it.
