Neeleshwar Hermitage is something of a hidden gem, tucked away in a secluded beach-side palm grove by the Arabian Sea in North Kerala.

There are 18 unique thatched cottages, appearing as traditional fishing huts on the outside but with contemporary touches within. Some enjoy private plunge pools and sea views and all feature teak floors, high ceilings and generous proportions, embellished with locally handmade furniture, and antique and contemporary art.

Making the most of its tranquil location, the resort is focussed on holistic wellbeing, combining blissful relaxation, the practices of massage, meditation and yoga, and, if you wish, a diet plan chosen by the Ayurvedic doctor. All the preparations are completely natural and organically produced, sourced in a sustainable way that employs disadvantaged tribal groups in the Sahayadri Mountains of Kerala.

There are two restaurants, The Annapurna restaurant which specialises in authentic, predominantly vegetarian food, and Meenakshi where you can enjoy just-caught fish from the local long boats that go out each morning.

Aside from wellness, you can learn about the art of the region’s cuisine in cookery classes, explore the serene waters on a houseboat, head inland to the great green Western Ghats, discover the area by bike, go bird watching and visit historic landmarks.
