Eremo della Giubiliana

Eremo della Giubiliana has worn many a coat in its time; part of the 12th-century ecclesiastical feudal hold of Renna, a rural Arab home and a fortress defending against Barbary pirates, it was acquired by wealthy landowners in the 18th century and has since been restored into a beautiful five-star hotel.

Set on the Hyblean Plateau in the heart of south east Sicily, the hotel is surrounded by ancient stone walls, carob forests and miles and miles of coastline. On a clear day you can look out towards Malta and the African coastline.

The hotel has plenty of charm and has kept many of its features including original pitch stone and limestone flooring and antique furniture. Rooms occupy the former friars’ cells and many look out onto the garden with its Mediterranean plants, olive trees and fountain. There are also five stone cottages located a short walk from the main house, that offer spectacular views over the highlands and the sea.

A warm welcome, traditional of Sicilian countryside residences, extends to dinner and you can dine in the atmospheric restaurant located in the ancient refectory. Arched ceilings and large French windows that open out and offer spectacular views of parkland and the sea make the perfect setting in which to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine. In summer, enjoy the long warm days and dine in the garden. A wine cellar is well stocked and guests can enjoy tasting their extensive collection alongside locally produced olive oil and sausage from their own black pigs.

There is plenty to keep you occupied; the hotel has its own necropolis dating from the 5th to 3rd BC, and artefacts found on site can be admired by guests. There are plenty of walking trails and the towns of Taormina, Siracusa and Val di Noto are just a short drive away. A private airstrip means the hotel can offer scenic flying tours, which are a great way to appreciate the island’s beauty.
