Set along the winding road from Capri to Anacarpri, the Hotel Caesar Augustus’ famous cliff edge terrace and statue, pointing out across the Bay of Naples, have become iconic of the entire island. Once the private residence of a Russian prince, the villa was transformed into a luxury hotel in the 1940s that has remained in high esteem ever since.
It still feels very much like a private home (an exquisitely palatial one) with 49 finely furnished bedrooms, each of which looks out over the sea surrounding Capri or the hotel’s cliff top gardens. Six individually appointed suites boast views across the bay from each and every window and terrace, along with four poster beds, luxurious marble bathrooms with jacuzzi tubs and rain showers.
Outside, the terrace’s views and inviting sofas are an unbeatable spot to relax with good book, a glass of wine and maybe a few morsels of Mediterranean sushi. There’s also a large infinity swimming pool, outdoor wellness area and verdant garden to explore.
The Caesar Augustus’ restaurant, La Terrazza di Lucullo, takes aromatic herbs and organic vegetables from the gardens and local produce to make regional cuisine, all well complimented well by the view.
Further afield, excursions aboard one of Capri’s traditional fishing boats can be arranged, sailing to all of the island’s amazing sea caves, including the legendary Grotta Azzurra, or across to mainland to explore the Amalfi Coast, the islets of Li Galli, Sorrento and even Naples.
