Huddled behind a ring of forest on the top of a hill fronted by the Rhine River, this majestic medieval castle dates back to the 10th century. Embodying classic fairytale visions, the interior is awash with antique furnishings, beautiful artwork, plush, patterned carpets, wooden panelling and golden chandeliers.

The 27 regal rooms and suites, which are each individually decorated, feature grand, four-poster beds, sweeping curtains, revealing dreamy vistas of the waters below and trinket-laden shelves. Some boast balconies or terraces and include claw-foot or expansive marble bathtubs in polished en-suites.

Guests can feast like royalty in the elegant restaurant, serving regional dishes, paired with local wines across three delightfully decorated, atmospheric spaces, including the Knights’ Room, the Squires’ Room and the Gobelin Room. A sprawling outdoor terrace is another enticing venue in the summer months, allowing you to enjoy a meal under the trees, with a dramatic view of the Rhine Valley below.

Post-dining guests can seek out one of the many softly-lit nooks to relax, retire to the library, or settle down by the open fireplace in the snug lounge. Outside the gates, adventures await in the form of cycling and hiking through the surrounding meadows, forests and vineyards. Set within the castle’s main tower is a museum, which is open daily, and offers an informative overview of its 700-year-old history.
