When the pretty beaches aren’t luring you in with their picture-postcard looks, head out to Ang Thong Marine Park for the natural splendour of limestone pinnacles and azure waters. This makes a spectacular diving and snorkelling setting, with Whale Sharks found here at certain times of year plus some of Thailand’s most exciting aquatic life.

6) Jose Ignacio, Uruguay
Less commercial than nearby Punta del Este, Uruguay’s stylishly low-key Jose Ignacio is the coastal destination of choice for the jet-set elite. Just a couple of hours from Montevideo, or a short transfer from Punta del Este airport, this beachside hideaway embodies understated elegance and really is a place of leisure.
