In the spirit of Karen Blixen’s ‘Out of Africa’, this special itinerary lets you explore two unique areas of Kenya that perfectly encapsulate its diverse wildlife, dramatic scenery and fascinating culture. Most importantly, you’ll be staying at two lodges that lead pioneering conservation efforts.
Here, spend three nights in one of just six thatched villas at the stunning Segera, an incredible retreat set in the middle of 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of preserved land. Game viewing is diverse – the area supports a plethora of endangered species as well as healthy densities of lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant – and the natural beauty of the plateau is complemented by a culture of wellness that extends to the soil, the environment and local community. Evocative ‘Out of Africa’ relics here include G-AAMY, the original 1929 De Havilland Gipsy Moth biplane used in the film, as well as a collection of Karen Blixen’s private journals and unpublished letters. You’ll also get to spend a night in Segera’s incredible NAY PALAD Bird Nest.
Next, travel to the Maasai Mara for a quintessential Kenyan safari with three nights at Angama Mara. Perched atop an escarpment on the edge of the Great Rift Valley overlooking the game-rich savanna below, this stunning luxury lodge is filled with subtle cues that celebrate the much-loved novel and film. You can even enjoy an intimate picnic on the crest of the kopje that is featured on the movie’s poster.
Spend your days in the Mara out on exciting game drives, walking safaris and interacting with the Maasai people. Or simply sit back and enjoy the view.
Example Trip Itinerary
Check in to your beautiful villa at Segera.
Segera is situated in the wooded savannah and grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau, with the glorious Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west. As well as supporting the endangered patas monkey, African wild dog and a sizeable portion of the world's remaining Grevy's zebra, Segera has good densities of lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyaena, elephant, buffalo, eland, reticulated giraffe and beisa oryx. There is also a wealth of plains game. The number of bird species recorded in the area totals 365.
Built alongside a river teeming with wildlife, the incredible NAY PALAD Bird Nest gives you chance to spend the night sleeping at treetop level with a 360 degree birds-eye-view of this beautiful wilderness. You'll be brought here just before sunset to find the nest lit up with lanterns, with champagne and culinary delights laid out on the open-air rooftop, and inviting beds (either open-air or within the shelter of the first floor) prepared with luxurious linens and hot water bottles, ready for the night ahead. The following morning, a picnic breakfast delivery is enjoyed while watching elephants, giraffe and other wildlife gather at the river.
With one fully-equipped bathroom, the Bird Nest is technically designed to sleep two guests, but a cosy family would also be welcome – for example the parents may choose to sleep in the shelter of the first floor, but children would love the adventure of sleeping out on the top deck.
