Situated 17 miles north of the equator, Borana Ranch has a high density of wildlife including large packs of wild dog, a healthy rhino population and predators such as leopard, lion and cheetah. The lodge itself overlooks a gorgeous lake which attracts high numbers of elephants and buffalo, and in the distance Mount Kenya can be seen rising out of the African earth.

The Dyer family who own the lodge and have done for three generations have a passion for conservation projects and this will be a large focus for any visit to this pretty place. Ideal for families, honeymooners or the adventurous, this ranch is free of the malarial mosquito and offers something for everyone.

Eight romantic and spacious cottages give you the chance to enjoy the wilderness and each has a phenomenal view over the dam below. When it gets a bit chilly in the evenings, you can relax in front of a crackling fire and sip spend time listening to the African bush. The main lodge area has an infinity pool and large sofas within are very easy to just sink into. The ambiance is definitely a family feel and the history of the conservation projects that they are so highly involved in ekes through making this a highly enjoyable place to explore northern Kenya.

Positive Impact

Borana Conservancy

One of the first ranches in Kenya to develop tourism and recognise wildlife as an asset. Borana Conservancy’s mission is to provide a sustainable ecosystem, in partnership with their neighbours and community, for critically endangered species. The conservancy is funded through a mix of livestock rearing, tourism and farm produce. By investing in the local community and showing them the benefits of tourism and wildlife conservation, Borana has gained local buy-in. The conservancy now hosts 20 black rhinos, 50 indigenous tree families and over 300 bird species.

Working with communities

Borana Conservancy focuses on a close working partnership with our neighbours and community: Meetings with elders from the local Maasai communities under the shade of an acacia tree addressing their needs. Another important part of what the conservancy does is keep wildlife away from the neighbouring subsistence farms: push elephants through fence lines; monitor predators daily; and the deploy of rangers to assist in protecting cattle and crops outside of Borana’s boundaries. The constant maintenance of fences ensures that these incidents are declining dramatically. Borana also has its own education support programme, and many young minds have been put through primary, secondary and tertiary education. The Mobile Clinic clocks up hundreds of miles daily, providing health care to areas that otherwise would not receive it.

The Long Run

The Long Run is a membership organisation of nature-based tourism businesses committed to driving sustainability. Here at Jacada, we’ve signed The Long Run Charter – a document that advocates for a 4Cs approach to sustainability. By focusing on our impacts across the different areas of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce, we hope to make a positive impact across the globe with our trips. The Long Run’s Global Ecosphere Retreats are hotels and lodgings which are centres of excellence in sustainability, and Fellow Members are properties committed to achieving the highest standards in sustainability by positively impacting the conservation of nature and improving the wellbeing of local communities. At Jacada, we’re working with a number of these properties to help increase the positive impact we’re striving to create through travel. Find out more about The Long Run here.
