At the end of the spectacular Shela Beach, Peponi has become something of an institution in Lamu since its opening in 1967. Still run by the same family, it has a charm and welcoming character that perfectly suits its location on the edge of the Old Town, and make it an ideal spot to unwind after a safari.

There are 29 rooms and apartments, two of the latter featuring more extensive living spaces and two bedrooms. Apartment guests can choose to eat any meal in the hotel’s restaurant (with freshly caught fish delivered off by fishermen off the boat to the beach), served in their apartment or self-cater – either with a private chef or by themselves. All rooms face the ocean and have overhead fans, mosquito nets, showers and fresh flowers, with larger rooms enjoying private verandas with swing beds.

Peponi has a legendary bar and marvellous gardens, boasting an incredible collection of exotic plants and tropical palms. Under the shade of coconut trees guest can unwind in the hammocks watching dhows sail by or freshen up in the hotel’s fresh water pool located under two giant baobab trees.
