This area in the North of Peru is home to some of Peru's most important and interesting archaeological sites. Located around the city of Trujillo, the Moche Valley is home to ruins from the ancient Chimu culture and include the vast Adobe Palace complex of Chan Chan and the Huaca del Luna and Huaca del Sol.
Further north around Chiclayo are the important sites of the Tucume Valley with fascinating pyramids and tombs. These cultures and empires, separate from those further south in the Andes, really show the depth and richnes of Peru's ancient cultures.
The coastline here is also famous for having some of the best surf conditions in the world and is a pleasant, relaxing place to stay after exploring the culture inland.
