The Serengeti area is actually made up of a few different reserves and ecosystems encompassing a region of some 30,000 square kilometres. In addition to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Grumeti, Loliondo and Ikorongo Controlled Areas also make up this game haven that is one of the oldest on earth.
As we all know from our exposure to all the fantastic documentaries out there, this is the home of the mighty Wildebeest Migration and shares it with the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Over 200,000 zebra also share the migration path which is a rather incredible sight. The tricky part is actually knowing where they will be and making sure that if you venture to this part of the world, that you get to dip in and find the herds that inspire so much in naturalists and adventurers alike. The migratory beasts do have a bit of a pattern that we can follow relatively easily however which gives us the prime opportunity to place you right in the thick of it. Nature is unpredictable so nothing is ever guaranteed but this park is a remarkable haven to a plethora of other fantastic animals and you won’t be disappointed visiting should nature be confused or when the migration has moved on.
Key spectacles which are worth aiming for include the calving between January and the beginning of March which is a marvellous thing to behold. Predators follow the herds closely during this time to take their chances with weak youngsters and ruthless as they are, can make for exhilarating game viewing. This time of year is extremely green and manoeuvring around the park and reserve areas can be a bit harder due to the long rains which fall during this time. With such vastly lush landscapes, the game also disperses somewhat which can make it a bit harder to find; but you will find it and you will be humbled.
