The Okavango Delta is rightly known as one of the premier wildlife habitats in the world. Home to an enormous density and diversity of wildlife. What makes this area so special is the flooding of the Delta, as water from thousands of miles upstream on the Okavango river, reaches the floodplains of Botswana in the dry season, animals flocking to take advantage of the ready supply of water and nutrients.
Botswana has taken great steps to preserve this territory with strong conservation plans in action and a focus on low-density, low-impact tourism to ensure the survival of this area. This makes for a very special safari experience indeed, with a ‘wilder’ feel than most you might find in South Africa but still with an amazing abundance of game.
Depending on the level of the water (and where you are based), one can also experience many different activities including the iconic ‘mokoro’ (a traditional dug-out canoe) ride through the reeds as the sun goes down or speed boat trips around the lagoons and channels.
There’s something quite magical about the delta, with its amazing sunsets, the sound of the frogs at night, the elephants wading through the reeds all combing to make an unforgettable stay.
We know the Delta very well, and can recommend the best combination of lodges for you, depending on your tastes and interests (and the time of year that you are travelling).
June through to October are the best game viewing months as the climate is very dry and the water begins to recede, making the animals congregate in smaller areas. It can be quite hot in October though.
