Fazenda Barranco Alto

Fazenda Barranco Alto is a simply fantastic place to see wildlife. A small working cattle ranch, it is set on the banks of the Rio Negro (an area renowned for its wildlife) and the wetlands are dotted with saltwater lakes and freshwater ponds meaning there is a huge variety of species to see.

All tours are accompanied by the charming owners, either Lucas or his wife Marina, (a biologist and agronomist respectively) as well as a local 'pantaneiro' guide. Animals commonly spotted include giant otters, capybaras, hyacinth macaws, toucans, tapirs and giant anteaters. This is also one of the best places in the Pantanal to see Jaguar (though sightings are not guaranteed). Tours are all tailored to the guests needs and are in very small groups. Indeed, the maximum number of guests at the Fazenda is just 9, making this one of the most personal places to stay in the Pantanal.

The rooms here are basic, but comfortable each with its own private veranda.
